Ryding Japhy

Last night we went to see the amazing Japhy Ryder play at Sweet Tomatoes… You can catch them tonight at the Red Nun in Chatham.  These guys are from Vermont, and came all the way down here to blow our minds with super tight, jazzy funk.  Think Medeski Martin and Wood but maybe tighter and with more horns.

MACHO MACHO… WHOA

We’re all still attempting to recover from last night at the Beachcomber, but when the chance to go and see the ironically cool Village People at the county fair popped up, you know we couldn’t pass it by.  What is it about fairs that attracts us?  It always sounds like a great idea, but three pounds of fried dough, corn dogs, and cotton candy later, all you smell is barnyard animals and stale people.  Not to mention the smoking…  Everyone from parents with kids to the people working the booths had a cigarette dangling from their lips.  I copped a nicotine buzz just walking around.  All told though, it was a good time.  We hit up some rides, won some stuffed animals, and of course saw the Village People.  I think only one of them is an original member, but let me tell you these guys were putting out their A game, especially considering they were all close to retirement age.  The crowd loved ‘em too.  Thanks to the Barnstable County Fair for comping us in!

Actually, one last thing… There seemed to be a lot of pretty depressed looking animals, from rare birds to your average farm types.  Why do people think that these creatures want to be put in little boxes and have kettle corn and cigarette butts tossed at them all day?  I just don’t get it.

LIVE AT THE COMBAAAAH

Last night our friend Don McCloskey came out and played Cape institution the Beachcomber.  Apex Groove backed him up, and I think it’s safe to say the place was going off!  It was great to see Don play to a new crowd, and from what I saw it looks like he made a few new fans.  If you managed to miss it somehow, don’t worry, as he’ll be back again on August 21st, or you can see him Saturday at Arturo’s or Sunday at Sweet Tomatoes (acoustic show with special guest Michelle Lewis).  Definitely worth the trip out!  We’d like to thank our new friends from IFAW for coming out and raging it even though the weather was bad, too bad you guys left before Don played a song for you!  (He dedicated it to “the people who save the elephants!”)Here’s the mandatory photo gallery…

JAWS 5… WHEN C.O.D ATTACKS!

And how was your weekend?

Here at C.O.D ours was nothing short of epic.  We rolled out (actually, it was more like floating out) to the Vineyard for the Monster Shark Tournament… Keep your eyes peeled for some amazing coverage of all aspects of the event in the next issue!  For now let’s just say that I’m pretty sure everyone (well, except the sharks) had one hell of a time.  After the tournament, we went to see our pals the Old Silver Band play at the Sandbar.  Lots of beer, even more heat, and the place filled to capacity with a line to get in all night equals one epic party.  I have to give the OSB guys credit, they were out fishing the tournament, showed up sleepless and sunburned, and rocked that place with no set break so hard they had to be asked to mellow it out.

After crashing at the always generous Jordan’s house, we somehow made our way back to the mainland to nap for a few minutes before heading to the weekly C.O.D sponsored party at the Landfall with none other than the OSB again.  The place was packed, and amazingly I saw a lot of people from the night before still at it.  You gotta hand it to them for perseverance!

I’ll leave you with some pics…  Don’t miss the next issue for more madness than you can shake a dead shark at!
